LEB Smart Search — unlocking an industry's safety knowledge
Safer Together is the Australian energy production industry's safety body — the organisation through which member companies share safety learnings across the sector. One of its most valuable assets is the Learning Event Bulletin library: 140+ documented incidents and lessons, each one paid for in real consequences on real sites.
There was just one challenge: the library was searchable only if you already knew the keywords. If a supervisor searched "dropped object" and the bulletin said "falling equipment", the lesson stayed buried — and an avoidable incident stayed avoidable in theory only.
The engagement
Safer Together engaged FICARIS to unlock the library. The brief was direct: make every lesson findable by the people who need it, in the language those people actually use.
We built LEB Smart Search — an agentic AI search combining semantic retrieval, reasoning, and direct document links. Ask it a plain-language question ("fall from height onshore", "incidents caused by material fatigue") and it finds the relevant bulletins, explains why they match, and links straight to the source PDFs.
How it works
Under the surface, the system runs the retrieval workflow we use across our document search deployments: semantic similarity search across the full library, an agent that reasons over the candidates and selects only genuinely relevant documents, and transparent search strategies so users can see exactly how a result was chosen. No black box — every answer links back to the source bulletin.
It runs semi-autonomously under human command, and it's live in production on Safer Together's public website — serving the whole industry, not a demo environment.
